About Your Heartland Marketplace
Family Owned and Operated for over 20 years in the Detroit Metro area

The Kassa family began planting their roots in the grocery business in 1934 when their grandfather David Kassa opened his first market in Detroit.  From  1938 to 1952 David and his Brother Jack operated a store called 2nd-Brainard Market. David  then branched out on his own and opened Shop Rite Market in Detroit which he operated from 1952-1965. In 1966 David’s two sons George and Joseph carried on the tradition by opening their own market in Detroit called K&G Market.  They operated the store from 1966 until 1975 when they purchased a larger market, a former A&P supermarket, and carried on the namesake as K&G Food Mart.  The store operated for 32 years and for many years George and Joseph had their wives and children involved in daily operations.  Dave, Phil, Paul, Chris and Mark did everything from sweep floors, put up stock, unload trucks and cut meat.  The three older brothers eventually opened their own grocery store in 1988.  They purchased a former Chatham store on Van Born Road and renamed it Saturn Food Center.  As Mark and Chris grew older they purchased a former Farmer Jack Store on Joy Road in Detroit and renamed it Saturn Super Foods.  In 1999 the brothers combined to open a limited assortment store in Westland called Sak-N-Save, another former Farmer Jack Store. In 2005 they also took on a partnership with a family member and opened a Dollar Castle Store with a limited line of grocery, frozen, dairy and meat products.
In 2007 the A&P corporation decided to discontinue its Farmer Jack operations in Detroit which opened up an excellent opportunity for the Kassa family to grow.  The brothers purchased the former Farmer Jack Store on 12 Mile Rd at the corner of Farmington Rd in Farmington Hills and the former Farmer Jack Store at the corner of Ford Rd and Wildwood (between Merriman and Wayne Rd.) in Westland and named both stores Heartland Marketplace.
The Kassa family is committed to providing our customers at Heartland Marketplace with  the same standards that have kept the family in the grocery  business for over 70 years.  Quality, freshness, competitive pricing and service with a smile is what you will get at Heartland Marketplace. We look forward to being a part of your families and serving you for many years to come.
